Even in modern times the illegal possession, loss, or destruction of government files appears within recent media and has been a consistent means of depriving the public access to documents that may incriminate or embarrass leading bureaucrats. Over last five decades hundreds of thousands pages of documents have been released concerning the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, nevertheless thousands of documents were by intent or ignorance destroyed or lost.
